Helpline

OcuMel UK has a helpline run by staff and volunteers.  Our aim is to help you feel less isolated, so all our call handlers have personal experience of ocular melanoma.  You can call us because you need help with a particular issue, you need specific information, or simply for a chat!

We can help with the following:

Emotional support

We can offer a listening ear to anyone going through diagnosis, treatment and adjustment to eye cancer, and to friends and family who need someone to talk to.

Meeting others

We can put you in touch with other patients or family members, whether that be online, on the phone or in person.

Specific issues

Sometimes it is hard to know who the right person to talk to is.  If you have a problem, we can help by suggesting ways forward that you might like to try.

Support with complaints

Occasionally, there may be an aspect of your treatment that falls short of your expectations.  If you decide you wish to complain, we can help you pin-point what has upset you, and support you through the process.

Understanding pathways

We can help you interpret the national guidelines for uveal melanoma.  We may be able to sign-post you to centres and trials that might be of interest.

What we cannot help with:

Medical advice – Only your doctors can tell you whether a treatment is right for you.  We can, however, tell you about doctors who may be able to assist you.

Legal and financial advice – Our call handlers do not have training in legal or financial matters, but they can sign-post you to other organisations that may be able to help.
